Do you know when it is Holy Year in Santiago de Compostela?
Santiago de Compostela enjoys a unique privilege granted for the first time around 1122 by Pope Calixto II.
The privilege granted, and confirmed by Alexander III, is that every year on July 25, the feast of the Apostle Santiago, coincides on Sunday, the thanks of the Jubilee can be won in the Church of Compostela.
Due to this condition, the Holy Years occur with apparent irregularity, separated by intervals of six, five, six and eleven years. The last Holy Years of the twentieth century were 1993 and 1999. The first of the twenty-first century are 2004, 2010 and 2021.
2021 will be the 120th Holy Year in the history of the Compostela Holy Years, counting from the Holy Year of 1182.
The conditions to win the Jubilee are:
1) Visit the Cathedral of Santiago where the Tomb of Santiago el Mayor is kept.
2) Pray some prayer (at least, the Creed, the Our Father and ask for the intentions of the Pope) It is recommended to attend the Holy Mass.
3) Receive the sacraments of penance (it may be 15 days before or after) and Communion.
If you want to live next Holy Year, we are waiting for you in 2021 in Galicia.
