Processions and furanchos: that's San Martiño in Moaña

Publicado Por: Simply Galicia En: Our Recommendations Comentario: 0 Golpear: 831

San Martiño, along with other events of the same stature such as Magosto or Samaín, is one of the most eagerly awaited autumn festivals by all Galicians. Although it is celebrated in more parts of Galicia, Moaña is the most important place for this celebration. And, after two years without its particular festival, the municipality recovers the procession, the music and all the typical food and drink at this time of the year.

Of processions and furanchos

The municipality of Moaña has a unique configuration. Its historic quarter is on the seashore, as is the case in other fishing villages, and the origins of the town are to be found in the highest part: in San Martiño. This small parish is home to a 17th century Romanesque church, accompanied by the centuries-old houses of the O Cruceiro neighbourhood.

In fact, the Festa do San Martiño has its origins in the year 1237, when the construction of the historical temple of San Martín, Patron Saint of Moaña, located in the aforementioned neighbourhood, was completed.

Although the festivity is usually extended to the days before and after, the main day will be Friday 11th, when the image of San Martiño will arrive at the cross that gives its name to the neighbourhood. Likewise, the mass and procession in honour of the Virgen del Carmen will be held on Saturday 12th November.

In addition to the awaited procession, this location is the chosen one for the celebration of the great festival in which the furanchos (the name given to the small premises set up, usually in cellars or in the basement of private houses, to sell the surplus wine from the harvests and enjoy some tapas and rations) are the meeting point for locals and visitors on these dates. In fact, this year, since last Friday 4th and until next Sunday 13th, a total of 14 furanchos (taverns) can be enjoyed.

As if the offer of these "improvised" taverns were not enough, they are always accompanied by traditional music, street parties, popular games and marquees with counters to serve more wine and tapas typical of the season and place.

This coming weekend we will have gastronomic plans to choose from, since it is also the weekend chosen to celebrate events of equal popularity as the Magosto in Ourense. And you, which one do you choose?
