Costa da Morte trips are back!

Our tours to the Costa da Morte will be back in just one month. We have no doubt that it is one of the most mysterious and magical areas of the Galician coast and we want you to explore it with us. Today we talk about some of the places you will discover and rediscover with Simply Galicia.

Next April 15th will begin the new season of excursions to the Costa da Morte with Simply Galicia. This plan includes transportation by bus, starting and ending in Santiago de Compostela, official Spanish and English tour guide and lots of good humor and anecdotes. 

Departures, which will be daily until October 31, will start at 08.45 from the Monte do Gozo Hostel and will make a second stop at the Pilar Chapel, on Xoan Carlos I Avenue, at 09.10 am. The estimated return will be at 18.30 hours. Now, once we set off on the trip, what will we see?

Muros

The municipality of Muros, hidden at the foot of Mount Louro, is a reflection of the Galician marine culture and tradition. Its historic town, founded by King Sancho IV the Brave in the 13th century, was declared a Historic Site in 1970.

The streets preserve the medieval framework almost intact, which gives it a labyrinth-like appearance. In addition, the houses and arcades will surprise you, as they combine medieval features with typical galleries of the late nineteenth century.

The Ézaro waterfall

The Xallas river flows in a unique way in Europe. The flow of this river falls through an impressive waterfall to flow directly into the sea. As if this natural spectacle were not enough, its viewpoint offers breathtaking views: the slopes of Mount Pindo, the inlet of O Ézaro, the small Lobeiras islands floating in the Atlantic Ocean and the figure of Cape Fisterra in the distance.

Fisterra

It is the end of the ancient world, the frontier of the beyond and the place where pilgrims, who continue their journey from Compostela, find redemption. From this location you can see the infinity of the ocean, as well as the Ría de Corcubión and the coast of Carnota.

On the cape of "Finis Terrae" there is an imposing lighthouse of 138 meters. The building was erected in 1853 and is the most westerly lighthouse in Europe. Likewise, it enjoys fame among sailors from all over the world, for being located on a very dangerous coast. In fact, in previous entries of our blog, we talked about some of the most famous shipwrecks in the Costa da Morte.

Muxía

In Muxía is located one of the most traditional marine sanctuaries in Galicia, the Virxe da Barca. At this point on the coast, it is believed that the Virgin arrived in a stone boat and showed herself to the Apostle Santiago to encourage him.

Although not only the temple is of interest, but in its surroundings there are some "magic" stones with healing properties: the Pedra de Abalar, the Pedra dos Cadrís, the Pedra dos Namorados and the Pedra do Temón. It is believed that they are the remains of the stony boat in which the Virgin Mary would have arrived.

Pontemaceira

The last point of the excursion will be Pontemaceira, a place of passage for pilgrims on their way to Fisterra. The medieval bridge, dating from the XIII-XIV centuries, over the river Tambre, together with old mills, the chapel of San Brais, the Romanesque church of Santa María de Portor and the pazo of the Baladrón family, make this village one of the most important historical sites of the community.

All this has served to this small village to win the title of one of the most beautiful villages in Spain.

Other considerations

The tour is guaranteed with a minimum of two people and cancellation will be free of charge up to 24 hours before. In addition, children between 3 and 12 years old travel at half price and children under 3 years old travel for free. Meals are not included.
