One of the most eagerly awaited gastronomic events of the season is held in the heart of the Caurel mountain range. The municipality of Folgoso do Courel recovers this Saturday, November 5th, the Festa da Castaña (Chestnut Festival), a festival declared of Galician tourist interest.

Chestnuts and wine in Folgoso do Courel

The event has been held alternately in the parishes of Folgoso do Courel and Seoane do Courel at the beginning of November since 1986. And, after being suspended for the last two years due to the pandemic, it returns in 2022 to celebrate its 33rd edition.

The Festa da Castaña brings together two essential elements of Galician culture and tradition: gastronomy and music. The inhabitants of the region taste chestnuts accompanied by good wine, musical performances by bagpipe bands and other activities in which this seasonal product is the main protagonist.

The event will kick off at 12.00 noon with the opening of the venue and a performance of roots music by Xavier Blanco from the Fundación Legar. Later, there will be a tasting of dishes made with chestnuts by the Cociñeiros Lugo Association. Also at midday, there will be the opening speech by the chef Xoanqui Ameixeiras and the awarding of the 3rd Chestnut Tapas Competition, as well as several musical performances, which will last until late at night. There will also be free chestnut and wine tasting throughout the day.

Chestnuts have been present in Galician kitchens since so long ago that it is hard to imagine an autumn without them or without Magosto. It is believed that its origin dates back to the time when the Romans imported chestnut varieties that were more productive than the existing ones. These spread rapidly and the fruit acquired great importance in the economy of monasteries, nobles and society in general.

Nowadays, soutos are more abundant in inland areas of Lugo and Ourense. This can be seen in the number and popularity of festivals of this type in these provinces.

Chestnuts and cogomelos in Riós

Also of Galician tourist interest is the Festa da Castaña e o Cogomelo de Riós, which is celebrating its 27th edition. The festival is the way in which the municipality shows, since 1990, the typical products of the season and the Southeast area of the province of Ourense.

The XXVII Festa da Castaña e o Cogomelo will open its doors on the morning of Sunday, November 6 and will feature various activities that will show the benefits of local products, always accompanied by traditional music and fun for the little ones.

As it could not be otherwise, there will be chestnut tasting and the "Castaña de Ouro" will also be awarded.
