Pontevedra opens September with the Feira Franca
Next weekend, on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 September, the streets of the old town of Pontevedra will be filled with a medieval atmosphere of the Feira Franca, an event that has the recognition of festa de interese turístico galego.
The Feira Franca has its roots in the 15th century, when King Henrique IV granted the city the privilege of holding an annual tax-free fair. This concession was a gesture of gratitude for the city's support for the king's cause in the struggle for the crown of Castile. It brought together artisans, stonemasons, ironworkers, palilleiras, merchants, artists, ladies and gentlemen... Today, the fair commemorates this historical period and offers visitors a real immersion in the Middle Ages through its markets, food stalls and activities crowned with the great medieval tournament.
This celebration, as it is known today, has been held since 2000 on the first weekend of September and brings together thousands of locals and visitors who do not miss the opportunity to show off their medieval costumes. Also, the festival achieved the distinction of Festa de Interese Turístico in 2013.
Friday will be the opening day of the XXII Feira Franca, with pregoeiros on horseback through the historic center and the show Os números by the company Pablo Méndez Performance at the Ferraría.
On Saturday September 2, from very early in the morning, we can enjoy the characteristic medieval market in Santa Maria Avenue and the exhibition of trades in the prazas da Ferraría, Pedreira and Peirao. During the day there will be different activities for the whole family, and musical entertainment: recreations of the transport of wine, songs of the blind and medieval music, entertainment groups for children, archery activities, falconry, fencing demonstrations, jesters, parades and, of course, the great tournament that can be enjoyed in two shifts, at 17.30 and 20.00 hours.
You can consult the complete program here.
In short, the Feira Franca de Pontevedra is a unique celebration that combines history, culture and fun. It transports visitors to the Middle Ages, allowing them to immerse themselves in a world of knights, maidens and artisans. Whether enjoying live music, tasting delicious Galician food or wearing medieval costumes, the fair offers an unforgettable experience that attracts people of all ages and backgrounds. If you visit Pontevedra in early September, don't miss the opportunity to travel back in time with the Feira Franca.
