Five museums to enjoy the art and history of Galicia

The options for discovering Galician art and culture through its museums are almost endless. Taking advantage of World Museum Day, today we present you five possibilities -among the many that exist- to enjoy a little piece of Galicia through its museums.

Museum of the Galician People, Santiago de Compostela

The Museo del Pueblo Gallego is an ethnographic museum located in the historic center of Santiago de Compostela. The museum offers a wide range of exhibits that showcase the culture, life and customs of the inhabitants of Galicia. Visitors can learn about the traditional crafts, clothing, music and gastronomy of the region. The museum is an excellent way to immerse yourself in Galician culture.

Provincial Museum of Lugo

In 1932, the Deputation of Lugo agreed to create the Provincial Museum of Lugo, which would materialize two years later in the Pazo de San Marcos. The continuous increase of the funds forced to move it, in 1957, to the old convent of San Francisco.

The museum has a collection of art and archeology that shows the history of the province of Lugo. The museum is free to enter and offers a variety of exhibits, from prehistoric artifacts to modern works of art.

Museum of Natural History

The Museo de la Historia Natural de Ferrol is a museum that houses a collection of animal and plant species from the region of Galicia. The museum offers an educational experience for visitors of all ages and is free to enter. Visitors can learn about the flora and fauna of the region, as well as the geological history of Galicia.

Humor Museum

The Humor Museum of Fene is a different and unique artistic center. The exhibition houses around 300 originals from Galician and worldwide cartoonists. In addition, it allows us to delve into the figure of the cartoonist Xaquín Marín, its main promoter.

Some of the most peculiar elements that we can find in Fene are objects such as "Gallego en las escaleras", the "Cabeza gallega", the "Gaspariño", the "Carrabouxo" or the "Trono do demo"; concave and convex mirrors to make the most original selfies; the collection of stones and objects of daily use painted by Serafín; or various publications such as the collections of "Sapoconcho", "Retranca", "La Codorniz" or "El jueves".

Railroad Museum

Inaugurated in 2001, occupying the old railway facilities of Monforte de Lemos, the Galician Railway Museum is perfect for train lovers. Among the components of its collection, the English-made electric locomotive 7722, the 10806, the 1800 or the Mikado 141F 2111 stand out.
