Publicado Por: Simply Galicia En: Our Recommendations Comentario: 0 Golpear: 417

In the easternmost area of the province of Ourense is one of the best known places in Galicia for its wine production: Valdeorras. Bordering León and made up of the municipalities of A Rúa, O Barco, Rubiá, Petín, O Bolo, Carballeda, Larouco, Vilamartín and A Veiga, this region boasts a wealth of natural resources. That's why Simply Galicia wants to get lost in its tradition and history in a unique getaway: a taste of Valdeorras.

The vineyards of the Valdeorras Designation of Origin extend over 1,300 hectares that occupy a large part of the basin of the rivers Sil, Xares and Bibei. In this privileged location we can find different varieties of grapes in which Godello is the main protagonist in the production of white wine and Mencía, in red wine. However, we will also find, on the one hand, Doña Blanco or Moza Fresca and Merenzao, Sousón, Albarello or Garnacha, on the other hand.

Pazo do Castro and tasting of D.O. Valdeorras

In this wine getaway we will stay in a privileged place in Barco de Valdeorras: the Pazo do Castro. For two nights in a double room and breakfast included, we will enjoy a building with a lot of history. The Pazo do Castro, which takes its name from the village where it is located, is part of a monumental complex formed by the ruins of the castle with its keep and the pazos of Casa Grande and Pazo de Flórez (the Pazo do Castro).

During our stay, we will visit two wineries: Bodega Godeval and Bodega Roandi.

The first of our wineries, where we will enjoy a tasting and pincho tasting, stands out for its Godello production. As they explain from Godeval, in the 80's they started their activity in the surroundings of the Mosteiro de Xagoaza with the aim of recovering the white variety of Godello under the D.O. Valdeorras.

The Roandi winery belongs to the Moral family, a fourth generation of winegrowers who have been working hard since 2008 with a single varietal Godello white wine and an oak red wine.

Our excursion will conclude with a guided tour of Valdeorras and the caves of Vilamartín. The latter, some of them centuries old, are the traditional cellars of the area, caves dug in mud and with characteristic chimneys (called refugallo) that served as ventilation and a method of regulating the temperature inside.
